Responding to frequent inquiries, especially from those who are for and/or treat at-risk youth, about the keys to effective communications and “active listening,” in this podcast Samaritans Executive Director Alan Ross explores many of the key issues, challenges and behaviors that must be addressed  before we even begin to connect with and respond to an individual who is in distress, depressed or suicidal.

Based on the experiences of responding to over 1.3 million calls on Samaritans confidential 24-hour suicide prevention hotline in New York City and the organization’s work providing public education programs, professional development training and technical support to schools, health organizations and government agencies, Ross provides the listener with a framework by which he or she can examine their own behaviors, beliefs, values and thought processes that directly impact an individual’s ability to be sensitive, responsive and an effective listener.
