Samaritans Suicide Prevention Center in collaboration with the Coalition for Behavioral Health held a rally on the steps of City Hall on World Suicide Prevention Day, Monday, September 10th to deliver the message that “Suicide Prevention Is Everybody’s Business!”

“Working together to prevent suicide,” has been the call to action of Samaritans for the past 20 years, and has been adopted by the International Association for Suicide Prevention to promote World Suicide Prevention Day this year.

Samaritans was joined by community based organizations from across the city including: the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Hamilton-Madison House, Comunilife, GMHC, Stomp Out Bullying, United Federation of Teachers, National Associations of Social Workers -NYC Chapter, Vibrant Emotional Health, among others.  Additionally, Samaritans would like to acknowledge the support of CM Stephen Levin who also spoke at the rally.

This rally reminds us that at the heart of every successful public health initiative is community; the motivated and caring men and women who work together on the front lines of our neighborhoods, communities, schools and places of worship to fight stigma, provide support, deliver services and anything they can to help.

This is an important message to deliver today when there are so many forces that divide us, so many voices filled with anger and distrust, so many myths and misconceptions tied to mental health.
