While mental health may be a trending hashtag on social media, there are still many myths and misconceptions surrounding mental health and suicide and it can be hard to separate fact from fiction.

Have you ever heard someone say, “only certain types of people struggle with mental health” or caution that “talking about suicide with someone in distress might give them the idea to act.”? Have you ever thought “ if someone is determined to take their own life, there’s really nothing I can do about it.”?

These beliefs can have dangerous consequences and contribute to the stigma that prevents so many individuals from getting the help they need. However, shame and stigma thrive in silence. When we examine these myths directly and openly discuss the underlying fears that support them, we can promote a wider understanding of mental health.
