When someone is struggling, it shows. It just does not always look the way you expect. This program helps you build the skills to stay in the conversations most of us are taught to avoid.
For over 40 years, Samaritans has operated New York City’s crisis hotline. We have had these conversations more than 1.5 million times. What we have learned comes down to three essential practices:
SEE IT. Recognize when someone may be struggling.
SAY IT. Start the conversation and ask directly about suicide.
STAY IN IT. Help someone feel heard and make it easier to connect with support.
Who should attend? For professionals, educators, program directors, caregivers, community members, or anyone who might be the person someone turns to, from the provider asking the question to the friend who does not know how, these skills will strengthen how you communicate on the hardest days and the ordinary ones.
