“Acceptance brings relief from pain,” is a belief at the heart of Samaritans non-judgmental empathetic approach utilized on our 24-hour hotline to helping people who are in distress, depressed and overwhelmed, especially those who are in crisis and potentially suicidal. “You can’t be listening, if you are doing all the talking,” the key behavior that those working in crisis communications must learn to be aware of, if they are to become more effective in developing rapport and providing support to those they care for and serve. Especially during the coronavirus crisis, when so many people are experiencing anxiety, panic, fear and isolation, our ability to connect with a person where they are and keep the focus on them (instead of ourselves) is paramount.  This podcast provides an overview of the awareness needed and the skills to be utilized that can make anyone a better listener.
