Brian Mishara, Director, the Centre for Research and Intervention on Suicide and Euthanasia, Université du Québec à Montréal addressed the concerns of close to 300 NYC health providers: How to talk to children about suicide, making the point that the understanding of suicide that young children develop and their ways of coping with hardships, can have great influence on later self-harming and suicidal behaviors. The professional development workshop at the Queens Museum of the Moving Image explored children’s (age 5-11) understanding of suicide and the implications that holds for prevention.  With a focus on primary school settings, the workshop examined: the development of conceptions of death in children; the challenges about talking with children about suicide; the myths and misconceptions tied to children’s behavior and challenges in assessing suicide risk in children.
